Mustard & Pepper Summer 2024

minutes and that hair-do is gone and you’ve got a rough tough hunting terrier. Our breed as puppies is not particularly gamey, with age girls are more apt to be ruthless hunters than boys, but when mature all will join in a hunt to the death (if they’re allowed!) I look at a correctly built Dandie as moving out with the rest of the terriers in the group, not one who has to be placed at the end of the line because he can’t keep up. He reaches out well in front, holds his topline on the go, and drives with evident force from behind. Few Dandies on the table like being examined, unless they are very experienced show dogs, who show their true topline. Determination of topline is made when the dog is going around the ring on a loose lead, that is when you will see the dog’s true make and shape.

As a breeder I look for the puppy who continually catches my eye. Just like in the show ring, the dog who continually catches your eye is probably the best one, your keeper. It’ll be the puppy who moves out with his head in a natural position, reaches out well in front and drives well from behind, with his tail held close to the desired position and as he grows older that tail is where we want it. In closing, as a breeder we must realize that the best laid plans don’t always work out. I can remember what I thought would be a fabulous litter, great parents, very accomplished, line bred on good dogs. There were seven puppies and only one a bitch. I kept her until finally at six months of age my best friend said to me, “She’s ugly,” and that was true. I kept waiting for a miracle. So a litter of seven went off to be good looking pets and not one kept to show and breed.

EVENTS FOR DANDIES!!! by Diane Hanowitz, DDTCA Outreach Coordinator

We want to introduce our Dandies to others and increase awareness of our breed. Every time I take my Dandies to events, there are lines of people waiting to meet them. Please help us share your Dandie and the knowledge about our endangered breed with others. Here are a few events associated with Celtic and Scottish Games that allow us to participate.
