to Darcy Downs-Vollbracht and Mary Downs for testing as many Dandies as they could for CGC and Trick Dog and having DNA swabs available. Thank you to BJ Pumfrey for the lovely pillows with our 2024 logo on them available at the auction and thank you to Scott Coykendall for his help setting up the AV equipment for the seminars. Thank you to Donna Francis and Betty-Anne Stenmark for their ringside mentoring during the National. Thank you to all that donated to and bid on items at the auction and to all that donated to the National general fund and for the National trophies ribbons. Last but not least, 100 million thanks to our President and my right-hand man, Sandy Wolfskill, without whom our National would not have been the success it was and without whom I would shoot myself. I’d also like to encourage each and everyone of you to volunteer to help at the 2025 National. If you’d like to continue to have all the extras and not have it be just a conformation show, we need help and lots of it. You need not live in or near Gray Summit – none of us do. Most of the jobs, if not all, can be done remotely and we need you. Please consider volunteering to do something for next year’s National.

From the Editor I always use my space here after our National to thank everyone that helped and this year is no different! First, I’d like to thank our seminar presenters, Jay Richardson for his “View From the Center of the Ring” seminar, Betty-Anne Stenmark, for our first Breeders Education Seminar, and Trisha Smith, for her “Estate Planning for Dog Lovers” seminar, all very well-received. If you did not attend, you really missed out. Additionally, thanks must go to Trisha for all the added Secretary work that comes along with the National. Many thanks to our new Trophy Chair, Melissa Jethanandani, for getting all the Specialty and Annual trophies to St. Louis this year, and all the volunteers who helped set up and man the trophy table, Earl Hunt, Rich Harvey, Janet Machala, and Dick Yoho. Additional thanks to Dick for the great Dandie cutout decorations that were auctioned off and the beautiful judges gifts that were so well-received. Thank you to Sheridan Dulaney for organizing the dinner at the banquet and Trista Acker for all the hard work that goes into the banquet auction. Additional thanks to Trista for all the added Treasurer responsibilities that go along with a National Specialty. Many thanks to all that helped her with set up at the auction, Barbara Baese, Karla Bevel, Cathy LoCascio, and Dick Yoho. Thank you ... Thank You!

CH King’s Mtn. Jiminy Kricket Jiminy Kricket has been to only two weekends of shows, always breeder-owner-handled by Sandra. Shown three times as a six-mont-old puppy on the 2023 National weekend he garnered 13 points and three majors, the highlight being Best of Winners

and Best Bred-By Exhibitor at the National Specialty. Returning in 2024 he finished his title the first day and as a move-up the next day he won Best of Breed. If that wasn’t enough, the following day he won the National Specialty and on to a Group 1. The fourth day he won the Breed again and a Group 4. As it’s a very long way from California to Purina Farms, three days and two nights on the road, and we find four days of shows enough, we left for home Monday morning. We brought a young 18-month-old dog to show, hoping to finish his title and perhaps a bit more. We are thrilled with what Jiminy has accomplished and to date he is undefeated in the toughest breed competition in the country, first in the dog classes and then at the breed level as a Champion. He is the result of our version of an outcross, back to a dog we whelped in 1995, keeping the last of the frozen semen for the beautiful Ch. King’s Mtn. Tilly Tiptoes. Jiminy is the sire of two beautiful young daughters out of Ch King’s Mtn. Holly Berry BCAT CGC TKN TL-I UL-I. The pedigrees of these dogs can be found on dandiebase.com. Jiminy is as beautiful on the inside as he is on the outside, a wonderfully sweet dog to live with. Jiminy is the culmination of 48 years of King’s Mtn. Breeding and yes we are very proud. Breeders: Sandra Pretari Hickson, Betty-Anne Stenmark, and BJ Pumfrey From the President It is hard to believe that we have reached the halfway mark for 2024! What a busy six months for a number of your officers, board, and committees, starting with the 2024 DDTCA National Specialty. Kudos to Sandra Pretari Hickson and her team for another special National with fuve days of competition for Dandies! Yes, there were a few anxious moments, as the superintendent tried to relocate us when Best of Breed competition was in the ring, but the amazing ring steward (spouse of Judge Bergit Coady-Kabel, by the way) had her class assembled and judging underway before the superintendent could force the move. Rest assured there will be conversations with both the host club, who was not at fault, and the superintendent, who just plain scheduled us in the wrong ring, to avoid this drama in the future. There are several reasons for wanting to stay at Purine Farms, so as of right now, plan on “same time, same place” for the 2025 DDTCA National Specialty. We are also now able to announce, pending AKC approval, the judges for the 2025 Specialty. Mrs. Mike Macbeth from Canada will be doing regular and non-regular classes. Sweepstakes, puppy and veteran, will be judged by Diane Hanowitz. For 2026, John Wade will adjudicate the regular and non-regular classes and Karen Dorn will judge puppy and veteran sweepstakes. In order to give the all-breed clubs our selections in time for their panels, we will be doing the ballot process for the 2027 and 2028 Nationals later this year, hopefully, using the electronic ballot process approved in the updated bylaws last year. Elsewhere in this issue you will find complete information describing a very exciting new DDTCA program – the Versatile Dandie! Thanks to Mary Downs and D’Arcy Downs-Vollbracht

and their performance committee, the Board approved this new club recognition for our hard-working Dandies. I cannot wait to see who is the first to apply, and how many “big” recognition rosettes we will provide next year celebrating these dogs at the National. Details and application forms will also be posted to our website: www.ddtca.org The Board also approved two additional outreach tools for our club. A dedicated YouTube channel is in the works, along with a presence on Instagram. TikTok may be added later, pending the outcome of the ownership issues currently surrounding this specific platform. In its current form, “X” will not be used by the DDTCA. The Communications and Social Media committee is on the way to being up and running, and the success of these new channel, plus a revamping of our Facebook page, depends on your contributions! Watch for a special DandieFlash in the near future with information on how to provide materials for each of these channels. Outreach Coordinator Diane Hanowitz has updated the listing of events where Dandies may attend and meet the public. Check under Events on the website and watch for announcements on our Facebook page. Video clips from these events will be welcome and may be posted to the YouTube channel as well. Finally, we are catching up for the championship medallions and providing breed medallions for the AKC show in Orlando, Florida in December. Club championship medallions are provided to any Dandie Dinmont who completes an AKC championship-regular championship only, not grand championships. We have the new titles lists for 2021-current from AKC and will be mailing the medallions next month. If your dog finished before 2021 and you did not receive a medallion, please contact me with the dog’s name and AKC number for conformation and we will send out the medallion. The medallions for the December, 2024 AKC show will be given for Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, Select Dog, Select Bitch, and Best Bred By Exhibitor, per AKC guidelines. As summer heats up, please take care of yourselves and your dogs-stay cool and watch this space for more exciting opportunities to showcase our wonderful breed! Any questions, ideas, or issues, please do not hesitate to contact me at sandywolfskill@gmail.com. Sandy Wolfskill Delegate Report I would be remiss if I did thank our former Delegate, Karen Dorn, for 16 years of service to the breed and to the DDTCA. As I was leaving for Newark, New Jersey, for my first Delegates meetings, I also received a call from Karen and not only had she lined me up with friends she had made that would be helpful to me, but even arranged for me to join the group for dinner. Thank you, Karen, for everything. Canine Health Committee – June 10, 2024 Dr. Charles Garvin reported on the activities of the AKC Canine Health Foundation. As a demonstration of the Foundation’s ability to respond rapidly to emerging health concerns, Dr. Garvin cited a recent award to Dr. David Needle, University of New Hampshire, directed at determining whether or not the agent

responsible for a recent outbreak of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Syndrome, especially prevalent in New England, was caused by a new pathogen. In the course of this work, the normal respiratory biome would be more full characterized. Two upcoming webinars are offered, that first being open for registration: “Protecting Our Dogs from Infectious Diseases: How Can We Do Better?” This will be present by Dr. Jason Stull. Dr. Stull had previously developed a “white paper” for the AKC leading to several publications and assisting the Canine Health Committee in developing health recommendations for canine events. It is currently available on the AKC website Club Resources page.View on the AKC/ CHF website. The really big news was in the Parent Club meeting, Delegate meeting and others. Sheila Goffe presented the newest CDC news that many have been hearing about. The interesting part is the date of this was July 15 rather than August 1. NO puppy under six (6) months can pass from this country or another country into the US. Thanks to puppy shops that lied about imports’ ages and vaccinations and brought in diseases, including rabies. This was the catalyst for the new regulations. Below you will find the information that is from the website of the CDC. CDC Updates Dog Importation Regulation; New Rules will Start August 1, 2024 CDC is updating its dog importation regulation to protect the health and safety of people and animals by making sure any dog arriving in the United States is healthy and doesn’t present a risk to our communities. Starting on August 1, 2024, all dogs entering the United States must: • Appear healthy upon arrival; • Be at least six months of age; • Be microchipped; and • Be accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form online submission receipt . Additional requirements are based on where the dog has been in the last six months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States. For dogs arriving from countries with a high risk of dog rabies, they must be protected against rabies. The rabies virus variant carried by dogs (dog rabies) was eliminated in the United States in 2007 and CDC wants to prevent the re-introduction of dog rabies into the United States. This regulation builds on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic when a temporary suspension was enacted for the importation of dogs from countries with a high risk of rabies. This suspension will expire when the updated regulation goes into effect on August 1, 2024. The regulation also more closely aligns with the World Organisation for Animal Health’s standards for the international movement of dogs from countries with a high risk of dog rabies. Furthermore, it addresses recent challenges seen with international dog importations, such as fraudulent documentation and dogs housed in unsafe conditions if they didn’t meet requirements for entry to the United States. CDC encourages people traveling with their dogs to use CDC’s new personalized question-and-answer tool, “DogBot,” on the CDC website to determine what rules apply to their dogs based

on their travel dates, where their dog is traveling from, and where their dog was vaccinated (if required). People should plan in advance for future travel to ensure requirements for dog importations will be met at the time their dogs will enter the United States. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are curable or preventable, chronic or acute, or from human activity or deliberate attack, CDC’s world-leading experts protect lives and livelihoods, national security and the U.S. economy by providing timely, commonsense information, and rapidly identifying and responding to diseases, including outbreaks and illnesses. CDC drives science, public health research, and data innovation in communities across the country by investing in local initiatives to protect everyone’s health. In closing: I am very grateful for having a “Dandie” friend to be my mentor and to present me to the entire Delegate body. Linda Gagnon so honored me and did so as a friend of 50 years. Legislative Report In May, the US House Agriculture Committee approved a House Farm Bill (H.R. 8467) that contains important priorities for dog owners and breeders. These include enhanced protections for dogs under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and seeks additional resources for the United States Department of Agriculture to enforce the provisions of that act. It also improves USDA response related to dogs found in poor conditions by accelerating the notification of state and local authorities if an inspector finds dogs in unacceptable living situations. It also provides funding for transitional shelters that will accept pets so that victims of domestic violence can find safety and security without leaving their pet behind. It also codifies the USDA’s National Detector Dog Center in Georgia, which trains specially selected dogs and their handlers to detect and identify invasive and potentially dangerous pests and diseases that threaten agriculture. The bill also expands the USDA’s electronic health documentation for pets entering the United States with language reflecting the Healthy Dog Importation Act (HR 1184) that confirms all dogs imported into the United States to be in good health, microchipped, fully vaccinated and parasite free. The dogs must also have a health certificate from an accredited veterinarian and, in the case of dogs imported for eventual transfer, must be at least six months old. However, despite the many good provisions found in the bill, there remain problematic ones. The AKC remains concerned about the implementation of the Healthy Dog Importation Act that will go into effect on August 1, 2024, particularly as it affects dog owners and professional handlers who regularly cross the US-Canadian border. The Centers for Disease Control have summarized what will be required to import a dog from Canada (or any other country at low risk for rabies): the dog must be at least six months old, have a microchip, a completed CDC dog import form, a government Respectively submitted, Richard Yoho, Delegate

endorsed written form that the dog has only been in a country or countries at low risk for rabies and appear healthy on arrival. The CDC have emphasized that several of the forms acceptable for proof of residence in a low-risk country are valid for the entire period that a rabies vaccination is valid. For example, “The Certification of US Issued Rabies Vaccination” would need to be completed by a USDA -accredited veterinarian before the dog initially leaves the United States and would then be valid for three years in the case of a three-year rabies vaccine. Owners would not be required to complete a new form or health checks for importation during that time so long as they have the original form and provide it upon reentry to the United States. The AKC has also raised objections to the requirement that dogs must be at least six months old before being imported into the US. As of August 1, 2024, the importation of personally owned puppies of less than six months of age will not be permitted. The CDC have responded that unscrupulous importers continue to falsify health paperwork and that there is no way currently of distinguishing between personally owned dogs and dogs imported for commercial purposes. They are, however, willing to hear arguments for adjustments to these rules and are also willing to discuss other changes to the rules as they currently stand. Finally, the AKC encourages those with concerns regarding these rules to contact the CDC at: cdcanimalimports@cdc.gov or 404-498-1600 and respectfully raise them with the agency. Katherine Jacobson Secretary's Report Tricia L. Smith, Recording Secretary Summary of Board Actions March 2024 through April 2024 1. March 26, 2024 • The Board continued discussing the appointment of Chairs and filling remaining Committee positions. The Board also continued discussing the appointment of Regional Chairs. Vice President Sandra Pretari-Hickson reported that BJ Pumfrey had graciously agreed to serve as Reginal Chair for Region 8. • The Board continued to prepare for the 2024 Specialty. The Board thanked Melissa Jethanandani for agreeing to take on the huge job of Chairing the Trophy Committee. The Board agreed to transport trophies and silver from Melissa’s home to Purina Farms. Trisha L. Smith made a motion that the Club pay for the cost of renting a transport van to transport the Club’s trophies and silver from MJ’s home to the 2024 National Specialty and back. Earl Hunt seconded the motion. President Sandra Wolfskill opened the matter for discussion, and the Board discussed shipping cost options and why shipping is safer for the trophies and silver. Sandra Wolfskill put the motion to a vote. The “aye” votes had it unanimously, and the motion carried. The Board recognized that Melissa has taken on a huge job Chairing the Trophies and thanked Melissa for her efforts.

• D’Arcy Downs-Vollbracht and Mary Downs worked together on the Versatility for Dandies Project (“ Dandie Versatility Project ”). Prior to the Board meeting, D’Arcy circulated to the Board the draft Dandie Dinmont Terrier Versatility, Versatility Excellent, and Versatility Supreme Plan (“ Dandie Versatility Plan ”) that DDV and Mary Downs prepared for the Board’s review and discussion. The Committee asked for the Board’s approval to begin offering new Versatility titles that will recognize and honor the Dandie Dinmont Terriers and owners who are passionate about participating in performance and companion events. The Committee believes that this first step of offering Versatility titles will encourage more Dandie owners to get their dogs out to events where they will be seen by the public doing things that they can excel in based upon the wonderful characteristics of the breed. Dandie Dinmont Terriers are active and versatile dogs. Dandies were bred to have the skills and drive to excel in the field and are happiest when working closely with their owners. Modern-day Dandies and their owners use these skills to compete in the many dogs’ sports available today. As outlined in D’Arcy’s and Mary’s draft Dandie Versatility Plan, and to recognize and preserve these traits and to encourage owners to enjoy them – the DDTCA can offer the Versatility Awards, which reward participation in a variety of dog activities. The Versatility Award scheme is designed so that the average Dandie and owner, with some effort, can earn the Versatility Award. No level of Versatility requires a conformation championship. The three (3) Versatility levels developed by the Committee to date include: 1. Versatility – This will be the introductory title that owners will be able to apply for after meeting the basic beginner requirements of seven (7) points in three (3) categories. 2. Versatility Excellent – This will be the second level to the program and can be achieved after meeting the requirements for the first title and adding some additional achievements in one additional category of events for a total of 12 points in at least four (4 )categories. 3. Versatility Supreme – This will be the highest level and will require a working title and a total of 15 points from four (4 )categories. D’Arcy advised the Board that in addition to developing the Dandie Versatility Plan, the Committee has connected with four (4) Club Members to date who want to serve on the Committee and to help develop the DDTCA’s Versatility Project. DDV and Mary Downs envision having the Committee meet quarterly and review Versatility applications submitted by Members. At the DDTCA’s National Specialty each year, the Club could develop events and in-person ceremonies to honor Versatility accomplishments. Additionally, the Club could post announcements of awards on the DDTCA website. D’Arcy noted that once the Club establishes the first step of implementing a Versatility Program and awarding titles – the Club could next pursue a second step in which we verify to the AKC that we have a Versatility Program in place that awards Club Versatility Titles. The Club can then ask AKC

to approve these as “parent club titles,” which can attach to a dog’s AKC registration and name. The Board thanked DDV and Mary for a truly comprehensive draft Dandie Versatility Plan that showcases an incredible variety of activities and events in which Dandies can participate. The Board agreed to review the draft Dandie Versatility Plan and to discuss it further at the next Board meeting. • The Board confirmed the procedures consistent with the Club’s Bylaws and Policies for mailing the second round of Judge Selection Ballots for the 2025-2026 National Specialties. Recording Secretary Trisha L. Smith agreed to send the Second Ballots to Members who were in good standing via the United States Postal Service. Members would have until Saturday, May 4 th , 2024, to postmark their Second Ballots and mail them back to the Tabulation Committee. Earl Hunt would Chair the Tabulation Committee, which planned to meet on Saturday May 18 th , 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Steve Houser’s and Dick Yoho’s homes. Members could participate in the Tabulation Meeting via Zoom. • To resolve outstanding issues raised by Mike Macbeth (President of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club of Canada) about DDTCA Regions, President Sandra Wolfskill and Mike Macbeth met via conference call and agreed that the DDTCA will list our Regions within the United States, with a tag line that any foreign members would be considered participants in a Region adjacent to where they live (“ Canadian Proposal ”). Sandra Wolfskill advised Mike Macbeth that the Canadian Proposal required the DDTCA Board’s approval before it could be finalized and put into effect, and Mike agreed. Sandra Wolfskill circulated the Canadian Proposal to the Board for review prior to the meeting. Cathy LoCascio moved that the Board accept the Canadian Proposal. Trisha L. Smith seconded the motion. The “aye” votes had it unanimously, and the motion carried. The Board approved the Canadian Proposal. • President Emeritus Dick Yoho circulated information about AKC’s Pupdate Program to the Board prior to the meeting. He reported that AKC Pupdate is a free, weekly email newsletter with personalized content based on your puppy’s breed and age. This newsletter is for all puppies, including mixed breed dogs and dogs not registered with the AKC. The Pupdate Program gives AKC parent clubs a promotional opportunity to connect with new puppy owners, to promote their breed, and to collect feedback. Clubs that participate in the Pupdate promotional get a personalized email sent to new puppy owners based on the breed’s unique qualities and characteristics that includes the parent club’s logo, puppy photo chosen by the club, and information about how the new owner can access club resources and link to the club’s webpage. To date, 77 breeds have already joined AKC Pupdate. The Board agreed that this was a great idea. Trisha L. Smith moved that DDTCA participate in AKC’s Pupdate Program. D’Arcy Downs-Vollbracht seconded the motion.

The “aye” votes had it unanimously, and the motion carried. The Board approved the Club’s participation in AKC’s Pupdate Program. 1. April 23, 2024 • President Sandra Wolfskill reported some good news: Beginning May 1, 2024, AKC will work with Darkness to Light to provide Stewards of Children Training (i.e., how to recognize and report child abuse and exploitation). Eventually, AKC will require this Training for all judges and AKC employees. The Training will first be required for anyone who judges Juniors. SW commended AKC for its swift and decisive action, and for taking this matter seriously. • Sandra Wolfskill reported more good news: The Canine Health Foundation reports that DDTCA’s Donor Advised Fund is up to $3,259.00 based on various donations from the Club and Members. • The Board continued discussing the appointment of Chairs and filling all remaining Committee positions. President Sandra Wolfskill noted that although some Committee and Regional Director positions remain open, she confirmed that these individuals had graciously volunteered to serve for the following positions: o AKC Gazette Columnist – D’Arcy Downs-Vollbracht o Junior Handler Chair – Kara Coykendall o ROM Eligibility and Tracking – Karen Dorn and Sandra Wolfskill o Woodfield Investment Committee: Third Position – Trista Acker Sandra Wolfskill asked for a motion to approve these four (4) new appointments. Rich Harvey made the motion, and Cathy LoCascio seconded the motion. The “aye” votes had it unanimously, and the motion carried. • D’Arcy Downs-Vollbracht and Mary Downs continued their work on the Versatility for Dandies Project (“ Dandie Versatility Project ”). Prior to the Board meeting, D’Arcy circulated to the Board the revised draft Dandie Dinmont Terrier Versatility, Versatility Excellent, and Versatility Supreme Plan prepared by D’Arcy and Mary Downs (“ Dandie Versatility Plan ”). Members can accrue stars and points towards Versatility awards by participating in events such as Meet the Breeds, Scottish Festivals, etc. D’Arcy recommended that - because there are so many different types of versatility competitions - our Club should keep the Versatility Application as focused, streamlined and simple as possible and focus on Versatility Excellent and Versatility Supreme. All titles are very earnable based on the number of stars and point values structured within the proposed Versatility Plan. The Board discussed the revised Dandie Versatility Plan. President Sandra Wolfskill asked for a motion to approve the revised Dandie Versatility Plan with the modifications as discussed during the Board Meeting. Cathy LoCascio moved, and Trisha L. Smith seconded the motion. The Board discussed announcing the Versatility

Plan at the upcoming 2024 Annual Meeting and having a Versaatility Certificate ready to unveil at the Annual Meeting as well. SPH asked when we plan to implement the Versatility Plan so we could announce it at the Annual Meeting and do a big splash in M&P soon. The Board discussed having a Versatility Certificate ready to be unveiled at the Annual Meeting as well. The Board agreed. The “aye” votes had it unanimously, and the motion carried. President Sandra Wolfskill thanked D’Arcy and Mary for their hard work developing the Dandie Versatility Plan for the Club, which is a huge accomplishment and opens new opportunities and horizons for Members to participate in events beyond conformation. • Recording Secretary Trisha L. Smith reported that she had mailed the Second Ballots to Members who were in good standing via the United States Postal Service. Members would have until the Tabulation Committee would meet on Saturday May 18 th , 2024, at 1:00 p.m. to tabulate the Ballots. President Sandra Wolfskill and the Board thanked Trisha for the yeoman’s work preparing and mailing out these Ballots. • President Sandra Wolfskill asked for a motion to move the May 2024 Board Meeting to Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. in person at 6 Flags Holiday Inn, Eureka, Missouri to be held concurrently with the Club’s Annual Board Meeting. Vice President Sandra Pretari-Hickson made the motion and Earl Hunt seconded. The “aye” votes had it unanimously, and the motion carried. • SW circulated to the Board prior to the Meeting a proposal about how the Club could address Dandies that deserve ROM presently and moving forward while the Club reconstructs its historic ROM files. Her current ROM proposal includes three levels. We will start the process of re-establishing our three levels: (1) ROM; (2) ROM Award of Distinction; and (3) ROM Top Producer. This will help to bring our Club’s ROM program back into operation. She advised that Karen Dorn had graciously agreed to assist with getting the ROM program up and running again. Sandra asked for a motion to re-implement the Club’s Register of Merit Program as proposed during the meeting. Earl Hunt made the motion and Sandra Pretari-Hickson seconded. The “aye” votes had it unanimously, and the motion carried. • President Sandra Wolfskill advised the Board that Karen and Larry Dorn had graciously donated the following awards to the Club: (1) The Grand Champion Gold Derrydown Can We Be Frank: An NOHS Award; and (2) The Derrydown Best Veteran in Specialty Award as proposed during the meeting. Sandra called for a motion that the Club accepts the Dorns’ generous donation. D’Arcy Downs-Vollbracht made the motion and Earl Hunted seconded. The “aye” votes had it unanimously, and the motion carried. • Dick Yoho advised the Board that he received his acknowledgement from AKC that he is now the DDTCA’s official AKC Delegate.

Membership Report June, 2024 The following applicants are respectfully presented for review and consideration by the Board: Debra Bradley 1340 Thompson Avenue Glendale, California 91201 United States DrDebraBradley@gmail.com I absolutely love Dandies and hope to acquire one by Spring 2025, if I can locate one! I have joined every group on line I can find to learn more and see the adorable pictures owners post. I have researched groomers and found Captain Jacks Groomers in Toluca Like where they do stripping. The piece I don’t know how to access is the events that might be taking place, I am willing to travel to see Dandies in person. I previously owned a dachshund who lived to a ripe old age of 17! It has been awhile and I realize how much I miss a 4 legged companion. I am a retired school Superintendent, having served districts in California for 25 plus years and prior was a high school principal. To share a bit about me.

Introducing Our New Communications and Social Media Chair

I am Alissa Flight, a third-year veterinary student located in Prince Edward Island, Canada. I had wanted a Dandie for about ten years before finding my Hamish. Hotshot Hamish is involved in all kinds of dog sports and I titled him in the conformation ring myself. I have Dandie friends in all corners

of the world thanks to my boy’s online persona “Hotshot Hamish.” I love finding new and creative opportunities to help promote the breed. I am hoping to breed a litter or two myself once I have graduated and settled into my career. I am looking forward to helping out in any way I can. I truly believe that online promotion will bring many fresh eyes to our beloved breed.

Congratulations!

2023 Windsedge and AKC Sportsmanship Awards Sandra Wolfskill, President Windsedge Award – 2023 Joanne “Jody” Moxham It was my pleasure to award the 2023 Windsedge Award to Joanne “Jody” Moxham, who has given generously of her time, talent and service to the club and the breed. “Jody,” as she is known to one and all, has been a member of the DDTCA since 1985. Over the decades she has been a devoted Dandie owner, breeder, and supporter of the club. Recently, when the DDTCA received a significant bequest to support efforts to reverse the “vulnerable breed” status of our Dandies, Jody accepted the role of chairing the Strategic Advisory Committee. During her tenue with that committee, several surveys, including breeding and health, were developed and completed. The committee also sponsored the Pat Trotter seminar, which is available on the club website ( www.ddtca.org). Recently, the committee has been working on interviews with legacy breeders as suggested by the American Kennel Club. Throughout her involvement with the committee, Jody’s leadership and insights have been a significant force for the preservation of our breed and have provided the groundwork for future activities by other committees within the club. AKC Sportsmanship Award – 2023 Karla Bevel The American Kennel Club encourages all AKC member clubs to annually recognize an individual who exemplifies the best sportsmanship in all aspects of the dog world– in competitions, clubs, and other activities. This year, is was my pleasure to present the award to Karla Bevel. In all of her activities, Karla demonstrates respect for judges and their decisions, fellow exhibitors, and others involved in the sport. As she likes to tell fellow exhibitors, “It’s about the journey with your dog and not the destination or goal! Always have a destination or a goal in mind, but never be so focused on the end that you miss the fun along the way!” Karla has expanded her presence within the club as the 2024 Membership chair, bringing her enthusiasm and code of conduct to one and all. She is truly a great representative of the breed and our club.

Meet the Dandies at the Ohio Scottish Games by Diane Hanowitz

T he O hio S cottish G ames held its event in June and I was able to attend with two of my Dandies. My friend Lynn was there to help, as she loves the breed, too. There were other Scottish and Celtic dogs at the Games in the petting area, but we asked to be in the Clan building because we believe that the history of our Dandies would be appreciated by the people that visit the Clans. We had a constant line of people waiting to meet the dogs. They were interested in learning about the breed, its history ,and to meet a Dandie in person. The dogs were always wagging their tails with children, adults, seniors, and especially individuals with special needs that wanted to pet them. The adults were amazed at how laid-back Harper and Bebe were, rolling over for tummy scratches and loving all the attention. It was the hottest day of the Midwest “Heat Dome”, and we had lots of ice, water, a fan, and the girls were troopers. We had a number of people ask about the availability of both puppies and rescues. We handed out breeder referral cards and hope that a few of them result in new Dandie owners. As hot as it was, we still had a great time and plan to find more venues to introduce our Dandies.
