SAC ANNUAL REPORT – MAY 2019
In 2017 we had 11 new members. In 2018, we had 10 new members. In the first 4 months of this year 13 new people have applied for membership.
In the first third of this year we have added more new people than we added in either of the two previous years. The second stage of the program is working. We have a really good start – but it is just a start. We all need to work toward making our organization open and welcoming to new members. Our actions have been successful at increasing awar eness of our breed and at drawing more people to our organization. That takes us to … Our Third Subject : Do we have the dogs for them? According to AKC , during 2018 our breeders doubled down. Back in 2017 we hit an all-time low of registering only 9 litters . In 2018, our breeders produced 23 litters – a 155% increase. Looking at individual Dandies registered – In 2018 we registered 44 Dandies from AKC litters … and an addi- tional 9 Dandies from foreign-born litters, for a total of 53 Registrations. That is a significant increase over the prior year. We send a special thank you to our valued breeders. But SAC recognizes that we need to add breeders . And that takes us to the Fourth Subject we want to share today – a look to the future. SAC is pursuing two avenues simultaneously. We are planning events that will help draw experience d breed- ers to Dandies, particularly people who are interested in adding an additional breed or who are looking for a smaller breed. You will be seeing articles in M&P that describe what we are doing in this area. Additionally, we are developing a comprehensive Mentoring Program that will capture the expertise of Mas- ter Breeders. The science of breeding transcends breeds so, in addition to Dandie breeders, we will be draw- ing on the best of the best. In order to get statistically reliable results, we need access to at least 90 Master Breeders. Dandie breeders in Canada, the UK, Australia and other parts of the world only get us to about 30 experts. We are extremely grateful that Betty-Anne Stenmark is willing to identify the additional master breeders we need. Her judging assignments in the US as well as the UK have given her first-hand knowledge of the best. We will harvest the knowledge of the master breeders in a series of surveys and follow-on inter- views. The Mentoring Program will be built in increments. As each new increment is ready, we will share it with you. All told, creating such a comprehensive Mentoring Program could take as long as 5 years. In summary, with your commitment to participate, we will continue creating awareness through our Outreach Program. We will continue drawing more people to Dandies and to the DDTCA . Our ultimate goal is to breed Dandie Dinmont Terriers that retain the temperament, health and sound move- ment to become all-around healthy members of families and to successfully compete in the activities that judge the soundness of dogs. Thank You! SAC Committee
